In the heart of Kolhapur, India, lies a cluster of workshops where the rhythmic tap-tap of hammers tells a story of tradition and transformation. This is the Kolhapuri chappal cluster, where for centuries; skilled artisans have handcrafted leather sandals that have graced the feet of royalty and commoners alike. Women artisans of Kolhapur cluster have joined hands to form a producer company which has been founded in the year 2023 and incorporated under the Companies law 2013. The Kolhapuri Leather and Chappal works Producer Company limited (KLCWPCL), headquartered in Kagal, Kolhapur, Maharashtra is a collective of more than 300 primary women producer members of Kolhapur. This women owned company has been setup to encourage primary producers of Kolhapur footwear to take on the challenges of mass production and leverage on collective advantages. This company works on collective procurement, production and marketing of Traditional Kolhapuri footwear thus giving competitive edge to its shareholders and support in spreading their wings to in the domestic and international markets.

Exposure to Women Artisans: We are committed to provide a platform for women artisans to showcase their skills and expertise through skill development programs; market exposure and design exposure. We aim to empower these artisans with the tools and resources needed to succeed.
Enhancing Income Sources & Employment Opportunity:  Financial Stability is of paramount importance for all, our initiatives focus on ensuring that artisans have sustained and diversified income sources, leading to greater economic resilience. Our goals extend to the broader community, where we actively strive to create employment opportunities for cluster artisans by fostering supportive environment and collaborations.
Promoting & preserving Traditional Kolhapur Heritage: We are passionate about preserving the unique cultural heritage of Kolhapur. Through partnerships with artisans, capacity building Initiatives and market related interventions, we aim to support cluster artisans be competitive and continue to practise traditional craftsmanship that defines the identity of Kolhapur region.

Our Promoters

The KLCW PCL has been promoted as part of the NRLM Cluster development Project of the Ministry of Rural Development. Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India are support organisations which have been instrumental in promoting KLCW PCL. EDII is functioning as technical support agency (TSA) > Key role includes hands-on training to the artisans in the areas of new design/product development and business management. It is also assisting artisans and the KLCW PCL in marketing cluster products. Infusion of latest technology and market linkages is another area where EDII is supporting this collective to become competitive and self-sustainable.

This collaborative effort by the above organisations is an attempt to collectivise Women SHG members of Kolhapuri chappal cluster to build their capabilities leveraging traditional skills & knowledge, Thus ensuring sustainable livelihoods and a brighter future for shareholders and their families.
